President promises “scientific” approach to NPP Govt’s Cabinet appointments

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has outlined his vision for a “scientific” approach to Cabinet appointments, emphasizing that ministers in his administration are chosen based on expertise rather than personal connections.

Speaking at an event in Monaragala yesterday, he said the National People’s Power (NPP) is moving away from appointing ministers based on family ties or friendships, aiming instead for a Cabinet rooted in professional knowledge and public accountability.

“Our ministers carry a responsibility to the people and are part of a united public movement to uplift the country,” President Dissanayake said, underscoring his commitment to building a government that prioritizes competence over favouritism.

He also called for a transformation in Sri Lanka’s political culture, urging responsible management of public resources and questioning existing practices.

President Dissanayake highlighted the extensive vehicle fleet under the Presidential Secretariat and raised concerns about the lack of standardized systems for resource use across the government.

The President further noted disparities in access to essential services, contrasting the round-the-clock ambulance access enjoyed by former presidents in urban areas with shortages at rural hospitals. He also suggested that underutilized government-owned properties in Colombo could be repurposed for public benefit.

President Dissanayake called for a collaborative national movement, bringing together politicians, officials, and citizens to promote accountable governance and equitable development across Sri Lanka.
