What makes these numbers even more special is that generally, spinoffs and prequels struggle to reach the same level of success and draw box-office collections as sequels do.
The prequel to superhits A Quiet Place and A Quiet Place II, the newly released film A Quiet Place: Day One is now making major waves in the cinemas. This crowd-puller, a part of a franchise that has already made its name in the thriller and horror genre, released in the theatres on June 28, 2024. On its opening weekend, the nearly silent thriller raked in an impressive $53 million (Approx. Rs 400 crore) domestically. The film also earned an additional $45.5 million (Approx. Rs 350 crore) from international markets, which made its global tally a substantial $98.5 million (Approx. Rs 800 crore), reports Variety.
What makes these numbers even more special is that generally, spinoffs and prequels struggle to reach the same level of success and draw box-office collections as sequels do. However, A Quiet Place: Day One has reportedly defied this trend. This prequel is set in the same post-apocalyptic world as its predecessor films and achieved the highest debut collection within its franchise so far. It surpassed the original 2018 A Quiet Place and the 2021 sequel A Quiet Place Part II, which debuted during the COVID-19 pandemic, informs Variety.
Impressed with the film’s performance, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution, Chris Aronson said, “We listened to the fans about what they’d be looking for. This origin story, giving them a new city as the setting and fresh characters, all conspired to broaden the audience,” Variety informs.
This film’s success is even more notable because of the absence of actor-director John Krasinski who directed the first two films, and his actor wife Emily Blunt, who starred in them.
A Quiet Place: Day One is set during the early stages of an alien invasion in New York City, where the population is forced to hide from terrifying creatures that hunt by sound. Michael Sarnoski, known for his work on Pig, took over the directing responsibilities from Krasinski, who still contributed to the story.
According to IMDB, the film’s plot revolves around a woman named Sam. She finds herself trapped in New York City during the early stages of an invasion by alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing.
