Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has received death threats from ISIS terrorists and LTTE groups, according to Manoj Gamage, Vice President of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Lawyers’ Association.
Speaking to the media Gamage revealed that, effective December 23, the Ministry of Public Security withdrew the remaining military officers assigned to Rajapaksa’s security detail.
Citing a report submitted to the Presidential Security Committee by Superintendent of Police M.S.D. Wickramasinghe on October 10, 2024, highlighting threats against the former President, he said that intelligence reports also indicate plans for a drone-based bomb attack by ISIS.
There are also further threats to the former President’s life from the LTTE and underworld groups, he added.
Gamage criticized the move to replace experienced and armed military personnel with only police officers for Rajapaksa’s protection, calling it insufficient given the severity of the threats.
