Despicable Me 4 Introduces New Characters To Franchise; Everything You Need To Know

Despicable Me 4 returns to the present storyline after 2022’s Minions: The Rise of Gru explored the origin. In the latest film, Gru, voiced by Steve Carell, has left his villainous past behind to work for the Anti-Villain League. Married to Lucy, voiced by Kristen Wiig, and parenting their daughters Margo, Edith and Agnes, they’ve added a newborn named Gru Jr. to their family of five. Their idyllic life takes a turn when new villains disrupt their happiness. The film premiered in theatres on July 3.

The film not only delves deeper into the life of the franchise’s beloved character but also introduces new ones. According to People, Gru’s nemesis, Maxime Le Mal, voiced by franchise newcomer Will Ferrell, has escaped from prison and is seeking revenge on the reformed bad guy for his incarceration.

In this film, Ferrell joins the cast as Le Mal, while Sofía Vergara voices the convict’s girlfriend and crime partner. Additional new voice talents include Stephen Colbert as Poppy’s father, Perry Prescott and Chloe Fineman as her mother, Patsy Prescott.

As for the plot, when Gru and his family move into hiding under new identities, they believe they’re completely undercover. However, their secrecy is short-lived when they discover their new neighbours are Perry and Patsy Prescott, along with their teenage daughter Poppy Prescott. Poppy, an avid fan of Gru, harbours aspirations of becoming a villain herself.

When a Despicable Me 4 teaser dropped in January, King posted it on her Instagram. “Say hello to Poppy,” she captioned the video. “You do not wanna get on her bad side…she can be pretty…Despicable.”

At the beginning of the movie, Gru is shown back at his alma mater, Lycée Pas Bon, where Le Mal is being given an award. However, the villain doesn’t know that Gru is actually undercover and the whole ceremony is a sting operation to put him in jail. Somehow, Le Mal manages to escape from the prison and now he’s on a mission with his girlfriend, Valentina, to take revenge.
