Ghilli is the first Tamil movie to cross the 10-crore mark among re-released films.

Many blockbuster films are re-releasing in theatres. Thalapathy Vijay-starrer film Ghilli was a highly-anticipated re-release and hit theatres on April 20. The re-release of the film took place two decades after the initial release. Ghilli was released in 2004 and was a mass hit, also starring Vijaya, Trisha and Prakash Raj. It was re-released in 320 theatres in Tamil Nadu and received a huge response in most of the theatres from the fans. The film grossed Rs 4.25 crore on the first day. Likewise, the second-day collection was Rs 3.90 crore, while the third-day collection was Rs 1.70 crore.

With this, the film has collected a total of Rs 10 crore in its re-release. Industry sources said that this is the first time that a film that has been re-released has grossed this much at the box office. The film became the first Tamil film and the second Indian film to cross the 10-crore mark among re-released films. Do you know which film was the first re-released to cross this mark? The re-release of Amitabh Bachchan’s Sholay became the first Indian film to cross the Rs 10 crore mark. Sholay 3D collected Rs 13 crore at the box office. Filmmaker Ketan Mehta’s company Maya Digital was responsible for converting the film into 3D format.

Maya Digital was approached by Sasha Sippy, grandson of GP Sippy, to convert the iconic film Sholay into 3D. The film was scheduled to release in late 2012, which was later postponed to late 2013 and eventually released on January 3, 2014. A team of 350 people led by computer animator Frank Foster, worked to convert the film into the digital 3D format.

The release date and trailer were unveiled by the original scriptwriters Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. It was released on 1,000 screens in India. The film’s star-studded cast includes Dharmendra, Sanjeev Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, Hema Malini, Jaya Bhaduri, Iftekhar, Amjad Khan and many more.

In an earlier interview, Sholay’s director Ramesh Sippy said, “Sholay has some incredible action sequences that lend themselves to 3D very well! The action scenes on the horses, the whole expanse of Ramgarh, Gabbar’s hideout in the hills, the train sequence in the beginning… they all just get so much more impactful with 3D.”
