The film, directed by Nag Ashwin, draws inspiration and elements from Mahabharat, and intertwines it with the world of sci-fi. Starring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan in the lead, director Ashwin put together an impressive storyline and teased the second part with a cliff-hanger ending and mid/post-credit scene. Let’s breakdown what the ending really meant and how it opens the doors for Kalki 2898 AD’s sequel.

Kalki 2898 AD Ending:
Kalki 2898 AD ended on a high note. Viewers learn that Prabhas’ Bhairava is the reincarnation of Karna from Mahabharat, who fought alongside Amitabh Bachchan’s Ashwatthama in the battle of Kurukshetra. While he wields the power after coming in contact with his weapon from the Mahabharat era, Bhairava is brought back to the film’s present timeline once he loses the magical weapon.
The film ends with an helpless Ashwatthama chained to the battlefield, hinting that history repeats itself in war, while Bhairava flies off with the pregnant Sumathi aka Sum-80 (Deepika Padukone) in a rather Ravana steals Sita style.
Kalki 2898 AD Credits Scene:
Kalki 2898 AD featured a scene after the lead cast was introduced in the closing credits. The scene plants the seeds for the film’s sequel. The short clip features Kamal Haasan’s Supreme Yaskin, who is a self-proclaimed god of the Complex situated in Kashi, absorbing a drop of a serum the Project K lab managed to extract from Sum-80 (Deepika Padukone) managed to escape.
Counsellor Bani (Anil George) explains the events that unfolded with Sum-80 while Yaskin inserts the drop. To his and Bani’s surprise, the drop held such powers that it not only helped Yaskin bounce back into life and grow a beefed up body but also wield Arjuna’s bow, Gandiva.
The ending paved the way for two meanings: 1. Yaskin has become a lot more powerful and his thirst for Sum-80’s unborn child’s serum is higher than ever. If he gains access to the baby and the serum, Yaskin would emerge as the most powerful being on the planet.
2. Yaskin wielding the Gandiva bow, which was created by Lord Shiva and was a celestial weapon used by Arjuna during the Mahabharat, not only gives a glimpse of his newfound power but also hinted at the possibility that Yaskin could be a reincarnation of a celestial being. Given that he resides on top of Kashi, Yaskin already considers himself at par with Lord Shiva. Maybe it was a foreshadow of his celestial connection.
Another theory we have is that he has performed to acquire the powers that brings him close to Lord Shiva. Much like Ravana, who performed yagnas which made him powerful to wield several weapons, Yaskin might have also opted a similar route with the added help of technology to attain his super self being.
Well, we will have to wait and see what Nag Ashwin’s vision for Yaskin is in the sequel of Kalki 2898 AD.
