This 2017 Hollywood Movie’s Budget Was 7 Times The Collection Of Highest-grossing Indian Film Ever

Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed Rs 13,000 crore.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens grossed Rs 13,000 crore.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens reunited the original trio of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher on screen after a hiatus of 34 years.

The recently released Kalki 2898 AD stands as the costliest Indian film to date, produced with a budget of Rs 600 crore. This surpasses other high-budget Indian films like RRR and Adipurush. However, Kalki 2898 AD’s scale is dwarfed by Hollywood’s most expensive productions, with its budget amounting to less than one-fifth of the costliest film ever made. In 2017, the space epic Star Wars: The Force Awakens marked the return of Star Wars to theatres after a 15-year hiatus.

As the first instalment of the sequel trilogy and the seventh film in the Skywalker saga, it also claimed the title of the most expensive film ever made. Its budget totalled $447 million (approximately Rs 3,000 crore at the time), surpassing the costs of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Avengers: Age of Ultron. The film achieved significant box office success, grossing about Rs 13,000 crore worldwide and earning five Oscar nominations.

The budget of Rs 3,000 crore for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is far larger than any of the biggest Indian films. To put it in perspective, even when combined, the budgets of Kalki 2898 AD (Rs 600 crore), RRR (Rs 550 crore), Adipurush (Rs 500 crore), Jawan (Rs 300 crore), Pathaan (Rs 250 crore) and Animal (Rs 100 crore) total only Rs 2,300 crore. This still falls Rs 700 crore short of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ budget.

Indeed, not only are the budgets of Indian films dwarfed by this Hollywood biggie but even their box office earnings fall short. Dangal, the highest-grossing Indian film ever, earned Rs 2,000 crore worldwide. Even combining the earnings of both Baahubali films (Rs 2,400 crore) does not reach the Rs 3,000 crore mark.

Directed by JJ Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens ushered in a fresh chapter in the Skywalker saga. The film featured a talented cast including Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac and Lupita Nyong’o. Notably, it reunited the original trio of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher on screen after a hiatus of 34 years.
